The Amalfi Coast: Day 1 -Pompeii

We arrived in Naples yesterday afternoon and this was the view of the Bay of Naples from our hotel balcony. Interesting street in front. Fairly quiet, but we saw a wedding party wandering around, a cameraman on an ATV filming a couple driving slowly down the street, drones with cameras attached flying in front of the hotel, and groups of runners going by. We heard a movie was being made. Quiet, but busy.

Tom and Cindy arrived later and it looks like we’re all busy checking out the weather on our phones.

Next, pizza for dinner in the city where it originated.

We met our Vermont Bicycle Tour (VBT) group the next morning and headed out to Pompeii, a perfectly preserved 2,000 year-old village previously buried in ash by the eruption of Vesuvius. This was the forum area.

Walking through the ruins with Vesuvius showing above the clouds. It was supposedly twice as tall as now before it erupted.

We see some of the many excavated artifacts including the replica of a dog killed in the eruption.

Next was one of the replicas of a person.

We walked on the same cobblestones that the people of Pompeii walked on.

Inside a bathhouse.

We walked along the street in what was a commercial area. A fountain is in the foreground.

Inside a residence we checked out the frescoes and mosaic tile floor, still intact.

Final stop was the amphitheater.

Gladiator Ross permits a photo inside.

I was so looking forward to this tour but was so jet-lagged I couldn’t properly soak it all in. Will need to read more now that I’ve seen it. We wished we had arrived at least one day earlier. A stop at the gelato shop outside the ruins helped us feel better. Cindy is making her choice among many wonderful options.

We leave Pompeii and head for Sorrento. This is a view of the Bay of Sorrento from the other side of Vesuvius.

Our home for the next two nights was the Grand Hotel Cocumella, a former monastery.

The veranda was a convenient meeting place.
