Woke up a bit queasy this morning. Maybe too much smorgasbord last night? Hoping it would disappear as we head to breakfast at 7:30, but I can only manage to eat a bit of bacon and some tomatoes. Our route review is at 8:15 in the lobby and we were on the bikes before 9 am.
The ride today was about 40 miles from Helsingborg to Landskrona and Ven Island and back. Phillip drew a picture of the route.
After getting out of Helsingborg, we rode south on dedicated bike paths along the Øre Sound. Our route included water views and cottages along the coast.
Throughout our tour we frequently saw flowers similar to purple loosestrife.
We turned inland for awhile and saw some farming crops which looked to be mostly barley and wheat.
We met the van for a snack stop, then after 17 miles reached the Landskrona ferry terminal.
After the 30-minute ferry ride we reached Ven island.
Our trek around the island was near seven miles but first we had to get up the hill from the harbor. I ended up walking at least half of it. Then the next thing we saw was the bike rental place.
Must be a lot of tourists here. And no cars are allowed on the island. Riding around the island, we heard and saw lots of magpies. This was interesting because I had been reading the book The Death of Mrs. Westaway, by Ruth Ware in which magpies are mentioned. The nursery rhyme “one for sorrow, two for mirth, three for a funeral, four for birth,” is about magpies and they were considered to be a bad omen. Hmmm. Heading around the island. Much of the road was gravel.
Another photo of turning a corner.
Halfway or so around the island we rode down to the fishing village for lunch.
We had a choice of herring or mackerel and my stomach was in no shape for either.
Our group ate outside at picnic tables.
Then we had the ride back up from the harbor and about halfway up, I vomited in somebody’s yard. Back on the bike, we rode past the underground research institute established by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe during the 16th century. He studied planetary movements without the benefit of a telescope trying to make sense of the origin of the universe. He built what was believed to be the very first institute of its kind and brought together hundreds of researchers from across Europe.
Here’s a sign along the road advertising strawberries and potatoes.
We rode back to the harbor where we ended up waiting around for the ferry. Although I am smiling here, I just wanted to get someplace where I could lie down.
After about 30 minutes, we boarded the ferry, and said goodby to Ven Island.
After the return ferry ride, I opted for the bus back to Helsingborg. About half the group did the same but Ross and the rest retraced the 17-mile section back to town.Nice ride along the water but needed to feel better to enjoy the day. Didn’t really feel like dinner either but Ross looked for takeout options and brought me lasagna in lieu of chicken noodle soup. The rest of our group returned with a pizza for us. Italian night.
