Day 2: Loch Ard Hike and Loch Katrine Boat Trip

Today’s hike options were also high and low trail options and were 7 1/2 and 6 1/2 miles respectively. The hikes were before lunch with no break and it was unlikely that I could keep up so I didn’t go. Ross stayed behind with me and checked out the spa for later use.

About half the group went on each route. The guides indicated there would be about 400 feet of climbing in the shorter hike and about 800 feet of ascent in the longer hike with 1,800 feet of descent. This photo is along Loch Ard.

Another photo from the lower trail.

A view from the higher trail with a touch of blue sky.

One attraction to our hikers on the upper trail was the number and variety of berries they found to eat. Raspberries, strawberries, and bilberries. Bilberries are similar to blueberries, but have a more intense taste.

Ross and I took the shuttle from the hotel and met up with the hikers near Lake Katrine and then went to lunch. We had soup and a variety of cold sandwiches to choose from as well as cake for dessert.

Then we boarded the Sir Walter Scott – of The Lady of the Lake fame – which was a 125 year old steam-powered cruise boat.

We cruised the length of the loch with about 50 other people.

We were scattered about the boat and looking for protection sometimes from the sharp wind.

A couple of our braver hikers sitting in the wind.

All the grandkids got a chance to steer the boat.

After the boat trip we go back to the hotel where people visit the spa then we have dinner and tonight, finally, we have sticky toffee pudding.

The kids discovered some new drinks such as Appletiser but are encouraged by our guides to try Irn Bru. I don’t think it was too popular.

Thirsty group based on the number of soda bottles left behind.

Our guides have several maps available and we take a look at where we have been for the past two days in the Loch Lomond and Loch Katrine areas.

Tomorrow is another moving day.
